Wandering Back-Roads West Virginia
More than 35 years ago, I began wandering West Virginia in search of stories for the state’s traditional life magazine, Goldenseal.
I am still wandering, writing and photographing for Goldenseal, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this spring.
To mark that milestone in North Central West Virginia, the Aurora Project will host an exhibition of photography from the more than 100 of my stories published in the magazine over the years. The exhibition opens Sunday, May 5, 2024, and runs to May 19. The opening event is from 4 to 7 p.m. I will give a short presentation about Goldenseal and my adventures, then open it up for discussion and book signings. Viewings of the exhibition will be by appointment thereafter.
The exhibition will be on both the first and second floor galleries of the project’s historical General Store building at 23976 George Washington Highway (US Route 50), Aurora. The location is particularly significant as the darkroom of National Geographic photographer Volkmar Wetzel is part of the project’s visual arts program in this building.
This event will also serve as the release of my first three books in the series Wandering Back-Roads West Virginia. The books contain the best of my work for Goldenseal, as well as previously unpublished stories garnered from the decades of exploring the state’s back roads and interviewing/photographing some of the state’s fascinating persons.
There is no admission charge for the exhibition.
Hope to see you there.
