Book 4 of the Wandering Back-Roads series
The fourth book in the Wandering Back-Roads West Virginia book series will be available to order March 20.
This is the largest book of the series and the final one that covers the entire state of West Virginia. In this volume, I explore some of the places and traditions of West Virginia that are outside the realm of “tourist attractions” and whose stories are strongly people-oriented.

The book brings a number of Preston County stories to print, such as a buckwheat mill, holiness camp, iron furnace, and Westerbrook’s amazing collection of American Road Trip memorabilia.
From the Northern Panhandle, there are chapters about the Family Roots Farm, Wheeling’s Centre Market, and Sistersville Ferry.
From the Eastern Panhandle are Harpers Ferry ghosts, the Shepherdstown Little House, Berkeley Castle and the Washington family properties in Charles Town.
Other stories include Sweet Springs Resort and the late Ashby Berkley’s vision for it, the Sagebrush Round-Up, Singing in the Hills, and the book’s featured story, the Locust Heights and Western Railroad of Clarksburg. Along the way you can explore a telephone museum, the grandson of a famous tree, and a limestone cave.
With the release of this book, I am providing the entire Wandering Back-Roads series as Kindle books for $9.95 each. While the Kindle editions do not include photographs, e-book readers can access those images in the “Documentary” section of this website. Image galleries from each book are provided.
We will be hitting the road with our books in April, starting with the Battlers Knob Craft Show April 5, in Philippi. Our books are discounted below the amazon.com price at these events and we offer even deeper discounts when you purchase the entire series, up to 50 percent off!
Autographed copies can be purchased directly from Carl, with free shipping! Send an email to carl@thefeathercottage.com to arrange the purchase.
One other note . . . with this release we are adding supplemental video documentaries that tie into the chapters. You can watch two of these on YouTube: Sistersville Ferry and the Locust Heights & Western Railroad.
